Common Questions
What is Jyotish?
Jyotish is a branch of yogic knowledge, translated as the “Science of Light.” Preserved in the 5,000+ year old Vedas, it reflects the ancient study of cosmic order—the rhythm of the stars, cycles of nature, and their impact on human life.
Is it the same as Vedic Astrology?
Yes and no. Jyotish is often called “Vedic Astrology,” but its roots are broader. When applied to outer life—career, money, relationships—it functions as astrology. When used for inner harmony and spiritual alignment, it is more truly “Vedic Cosmology.”
How is this different from Western astrology?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (tied to seasons). Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns with the actual stars in the sky. Because the Earth’s axis shifts over time, the tropical and sidereal systems have drifted apart by nearly a full sign over the past 2000 years. Jyotish reflects the sky as it really is right now.
What details do I need to provide?
Your date, exact time (as close as possible), and place of birth. If the exact time is unknown, I can still read your chart, though the guidance will not offer the level of detail that is possible with this lens. If you are concerned about privacy, simply omit your last name or use an alias.
What happens in a session?
You’ll either receive a recorded reading (audio + summary) or join a one-hour live phone session (recorded for your reference). All sessions are audio-only to encourage deep listening, but video calls are available if requested.
Will you tell my future?
No. Jyotish shows the larger cycles and seasons at play—it is simply a wider lens of meteorology—see it as a weather forecast for consciousness. It doesn’t fix or control your path, but helps you notice the conditions and cycles as you observe the “mindweather” conditions and learn to move with them more gracefully.
Can I book for someone else?
Yes. Returning or referral sessions are $108. Please be sure the person is open to receiving the reading before sharing their details.
Where does my payment go?
VedicArts.org is the primary work of Val Wise and supports her ongoing study as she works to share the art and science of jyotish with a wider audience. Ten percent of all proceeds session supports BabasFeedProject.org, which provides food for those in serious food scarcity.
