Ganesh Baba (Swami Ganeshananda Giri)
Ganesh Baba, formally known as Swami Ganeshananda Giri, was an esteemed Indian yogi renowned for his teachings in the Kriya Yoga tradition. Born between 1890 and 1895 in Orissa, India, he initially led a successful business life before embracing monasticism after 1945. Taking sanyas vows, he became a monk within the Naga Baba tradition, specifically the Anandakara branch founded by Shankaracharya.
Throughout his spiritual journey, Ganesh Baba received teachings from several sources, with Kriya Yoga being his principal practice. He claimed to have received the four Kriya Yoga initiations from Lahiri Mahasaya (at the age of four, in a dream), Sanyal Mahasaya, Tripura Charan Devsharma, and Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
In the 1960s, he became well-known among young Westerners visiting India, sharing his wisdom and insights with a global audience. Ganesh Baba’s teachings uniquely integrated Western scientific concepts with traditional yogic wisdom, reflecting his belief in a cyclic cosmic process of involution and evolution. He developed a “Cycle of Synthesis,” correlating levels of Kriya Yoga practice with various philosophical and scientific frameworks.
His legacy continues through his writings and the many students he inspired worldwide, including Dr. Keith Lowenstein, who carries forward his teachings with dedication and authenticity.
