In the Bhagavad Gita (1.40), Arjuna laments that when dharma—right relationship with life—is lost, the women of society suffer and despair, which sparks increasing societal disorder. Many hearts die, pierced with deep wounds.
This verse is not just about lineage, social structure, or traditional roles of women—it speaks to a deeper truth: when the feminine, the nurturing force of the world—the Mother force—is harmed, all of life falls into chaos.
Women are the protectors of society — they are its heart and the neurons of the earth. When women’s hearts are wounded, when their capacity to nurture is exhausted or misdirected, the world itself aches and the structures which hold up future generations begin to disintegrate systemically.
In some traditional interpretations, this passage is seen as a patriarchal call to safeguard social order, but a deeper reading reveals something universal: women, as extensions of the Earth, hold the wisdom of healing, nourishment, and continuity. If we protect and restore the inner sanctuary of women—their joy, strength, and capacity to care—then the entire world can return to balance.
Why “Mother Cloud”?
The “cloud” in the name “Mother Cloud” reflects the formless field of benefaction, the omnipresent form of divinity that moves between and through all things, holding it all together. This space is the element of ether—the place in between and through all things wherein all the other elements rest.
The container itself nourishes life unseen, like rain that does not discriminate where it falls. This is the Shakti energy of the universe—the cohesive, binding force of connection that holds existence together. By nurturing this force within us, we resonate with the very fabric of creation itself and are better able to strengthen ourselves and the beings around us.
We learn to cultivate the feeling of holding and being held by this force, together quite literally strengthening this field in our surroundings.
The Healing Power of Metta (Loving-Kindness)
In Buddhist and Contemplative Christian traditions, metta—loving-kindness—is not just a virtue but a literal healing force. Science now confirms what ancient traditions have always known: sending loving-kindness shifts the nervous system, reduces stress hormones, and activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. When practiced in community, its effects ripple outward, transforming not just individuals but entire families and societies.
Stories from Zen and Theravāda traditions speak of ancient Metta Monasteries, places where the sick and suffering would go not for medicine, but for healing through immersion in metta. The monks and nuns would sit in meditation, radiating boundless loving-kindness, and stories of miraculous and reliable healing spread abroad.
Modern research echoes this: when individuals consistently practice metta, they experience lowered inflammation, improved immunity, and increased social connectedness.
A Place to Restore and Be Restored
The Mother Cloud Sangha is born from this understanding. It is a space to heal women, and through women, heal the world. This is not about self-sacrifice but self-restoration—because only healed hearts can heal.
We will practice Metta via Twin Hearts Meditation, reconnecting with the boundless, regenerative love that is our true nature. We will honor our roots—our lineage as women, as earth protectors, as sacred nurturers—and through this, we will restore balance to the world.
If the world feels chaotic, if your heart feels weary, you are not alone. Come sit with us. The cloud is forming. The rain is coming. The Earth will heal.
To receive a Zoom invitation to the Mother Cloud Sanga and join us Sundays at Noon Eastern, please opt in below! It’s open to all women seeking to heal themselves and their world.
